Overview

Welcome to Path Finder! Path Finder is a powerful file manager with many built-in utilities and tools. Path Finder leverages the frameworks built-in to Mac OS X to give you fast, accurate access to your files and applications, while Path Finder's own integrated frameworks provide a user-friendly interface to many of Mac OS X's Unix tools.

Why Path Finder?

Path Finder's goal is to fill the gap between Apple's Finder and the command line environment by integrating many different features usually found in external applications into a single interface. This all-in-one approach allows you to quickly view, edit, and manipulate many different file types without having to launch another application or jump into a separate terminal window.

File Management with Panache

Path Finder offers you the functionality of Apple's Finder, with lots of extra goodies to help make working with your files easier, faster, and more efficient.

  • Use tabs to quickly and effectively manage multiple locations on your hard drive in one window
  • The Select Tool makes selecting multiple files based on a customizable set of criteria easy and fast
  • Move and copy files with a click of an icon, or from the contextual menu.
  • Open a file with any application in your applications folder.
  • Set colored labels to help visually organize your files and folders.
  • Reorder how your files are listed to suit your personal preferences.
  • Connect to local and remote servers, and mount FTP servers without needing any other application.
  • Find your files - fast: Leverage the old Finder's “fast find” filtering feature to limit a list of files by name.
  • View invisible files and navigate inside of Mac OS X packages quickly and easily.
  • Sort options everywhere: Control-Click (right-click) on column view headers to sort that column's contents by date, label, name, and many other options.
  • Access your frequently used folders, files, and applications with the Shelf, and save multiple Shelf setups to suit different activities.
  • Pause drag and drop operations by putting files in the Drop Stack for future use.

Integrated Applications At Your Fingertips

Path Finder seamlessly incorporates many of the more commonly used applications to help streamline your work flow. Having quick access to these features without having to launch a separate application helps keep the number of applications you have open down to a minimum, and helps to conserve system memory and time.

Some of the integrated applications built into Path Finder:

  • Text Editor: View, edit, and save plain text, rich text, and Word documents without launching another application.
  • Multimedia viewer: any music, movie, and graphics file supported by Quicktime
  • Light graphics editor: resize, convert, and manipulate graphics
  • Hex code viewer: Get friendly with the hexidecimal side of files with the built-in viewer.
  • Integrated Disk Burning: Burn files, folders, and disk images with no fuss and no muss.
  • Application launcher: Launch any application on your main system volume.
  • Screen Capture: Grab screenshots of selections and objects, and save them in multiple image formats.
  • Disk Images: Create and convert disk images right in Path Finder.
  • Terminal: access the OS X command line from within Path Finder.

Power Tools For Power Users

While Path Finder is simple enough to use for beginner, there are many power user features and tools available to help “kick it up a notch”. Path Finder puts a user-friendly interface on many Unix tools that are normally only accessible via the command line.

What kind of tools? A small list of what you can do with Path Finder:

  • Launch applications as the root user.
  • “Touch” files to change the modification date right from a Path Finder window.
  • Securely delete files from your hard drive for maximum privacy.
  • Copy file paths to the clipboard, and open folder paths right in Apple's Terminal, or access the command line directly within Path Finder's own Terminal window.
  • Create comprehensive, informative reports detailing fonts, clipboard contents, detailed file metadata, hardware profiles, and more.

Extremely Customizable

Path Finder is also heavily customizable, making it easy for geeks and tweakers to fiddle with the application's look and feel. Some of the things you can customize:

  • Color and Images: Change the background of Path Finder's file browser to your favorite image or color. Many other options are also available for customizing color in Path Finder - check out the preferences!
  • Sticky windows: Want a window to hide when Path Finder is in the background, and appear when Path Finder is active? No problem!
  • File listings: Display only the columns you want to see in List View, and sort by many different fields. It's up to you.
  • Much, much more.
