Path Finder by Cocoatech

The file browser with moxie.

Settings

To change Path Finder's global settings, select Path Finder > Preferences.

Reveal

An item that is told to “Reveal in Path Finder” can selectively appear in either an existing window (replacing whatever folder is currently being shown), a new window, or a new tab within the current window.

Set Path Finder as the default file viewer will force Path Finder to be used whenever a file would normally be shown in the Finder, such as when right clicking a track in iTunes and choosing “Show in Finder”. When this option is checked it modifies a few preference files in /Library/Preferences and points “NSFileViewer” to Path Finder instead of the Finder. While not all applications respect this option, most should.

New Files

Unix file permissions and the default extension for all new files can be set here.

Compression

  • Compress files in same directory as original - deselect this option to force Path Finder to ask you for a location to save the newly compressed file every time one is created
  • Expand files in same directory as original - the same as above, except when expanding files
  • Mount disk images after expand - downloaded OS X software often comes as a DMG disk image contained inside of a zip file, so this option simplifies the process of getting to the contents of the image
  • Decompress archives with Path Finder - when chosen, Path Finder will override any other decompression software such as Stuffit Expander and OS X's built-in decompresser
  • Ignore invisible files when compressing - invisible files will not be included within compressed archives
  • Ignore resource forks when compressing - resource forks are infrequently used in OS X, and are unreadable by other operating systems such as Windows. If compressed files are intended for use on a Mac, this option should remain checked for maximum compatibility.

The default compression format can be your choice of zip, sitx, bz2, or gz
