Directory field and Terminals

I think this would be a good place for someone to post what the directory field is for when you set up terminal sessions. I tried to figure it out, but it doesn't seem to do anything. I guess I just don't get what is is for.

It determines what directory new Terminal windows open up to.

Ok, I can get that to work for local terminals, but for remote terminals, it doesn't actually do anything. It would be nice if cd'ed to the directory you specify on the remote server. I have public/private keys set up, so at least for me, no authentication is required that could screw up the cd.
