Path Finder 5.0.1 is a free upgrade for all registered Path Finder 5 customers. This maintenance release fixes two issues discovered after the release of Path Finder 5:

  • A small number of users were having problems launching Path Finder 5. This has been fixed.
  • Includes new localizations for German, Chinese, Japanese and Swedish.

Path Finder 5.0

Path Finder 5.0 is a major update and a paid upgrade for all previous Path Finder customers. While there are some big new features in this release, the primary goal with this update was a major rewrite to optimize Path Finder for Mac OS X 10.5 and to take advantage of a number of new Mac OS X 10.5-only technologies.

As such this release requires Mac OS X 10.5 or higher. For customers still running Mac OS X 10.4 there is Path Finder 4.8.5, available from the Downloads page.

New features

  • Dual pane file browser (click the dual pane icon located at the bottom left corner of the file browser)
  • CoverFlow view - available in any view (list, column, icon) and also in the bottom pane
  • New Sidebar and a Drop Stack redesign
  • Network shares browsing in the sidebar now works for both AFP and SMB/CIFS
  • You can now “cut” files in the browser
  • Brand new image editor
  • Extensively rewritten and optimized for Mac OS X 10.5

Improvements

  • Path Finder’s sidebar now syncs with the Finder’s sidebar on first launch
  • Now using Leopard’s standard system icons in the toolbar
  • Many tool windows (like the Subversion plugin, App Launcher, View Options and others) now use the HUD window look
  • Hiding / showing the Drop Stack is now animated
  • Improved column preview area: Previews of RTF and PDF now show file contents; Images previews are larger (to match the Finder); Improved “More Info” button image.
  • Animated effects added throughout the application: for example, opening and collapsing bottom preview pane and Shelf are now animated, there are fade animations when closing the About box, Purchase window and Crash Reporter window, etc.
  • Optimized Size Browser calculation speed
  • Added symlink path to Get Info window so you can see if it is relative or not
  • Added “Eject” to Shelf contextual menu and “Rename” to Volumes contextual menu
  • To reduce application “bloat”: removed PDF viewer, console and network activity
  • Added the “Hide Finder’s Desktop” preference to desktop “Set Colors” panel to make it easier to find
  • Labels are now directly shown inside the contextual menu (to match Finder)
  • Improved the iTunes Browser look
  • New application and menu bar icons
  • Added Copy and Paste to contextual menu
  • Cmd-W now properly closes QuickLook panel
  • Optimized the Select tool - should be much faster
  • Path Finder can now preview SVG files
  • Tweaked drag and drop indicator - now grey instead of blue halo and hopefully looks a bit nicer

  • New standard images for Action button, icon / list / column toolbar
  • Upgraded Omni frameworks to latest version
  • Upgraded loops to Obj-C 2.0
  • Removed RBSplitView — we’re now using Leopard’s NSSplitView which has the same features
  • The zooming icon effect when double-clicking files is now handled by Core Animation
  • The bookmarks bar and the selected folders bar in the Find window use new Leopard bookmarks code API
  • Kqueues polling is replaced with fsevents. That means improvements in speed and required resources while refreshing various data in the browser
  • Rewritten the calculating size code - should solve issues of sizes not refreshing in some circumstances
