Path Finder 4 to require OS X 10.4
May 15, 2005After much hand-wringing and long nights trying to make things work as we’d like them to, we have decided that Path Finder 4 will require Mac OS X 10.4 (“Tiger”).
We are faced with this decision every time a new major version of Mac OS X is released, and it’s never an easy one to make. We have been working hard to try and ensure compatibility with both Mac OS X 10.3 and Mac OS X 10.4, but after much research and deliberation we believe this is the best decision for our users.
Why the change?
Path Finder integrates very deeply with the operating system that it is running on, and there are many things changed and fixed from Mac OS X 10.3 to 10.4 that we would really like to utilize. We realized that we could either put out a compromised version that worked on both 10.3 and 10.4, or switch to 10.4-only and really make Path Finder as good as we possibly could.
In the end, our goal is to make the best possible file manager and system utility. By make Path Finder 4 OS X 10.4-only, we have a better chance of reaching this goal.
I would like to personally apologize to every person that I have spoken to about Path Finder 4’s system requirements in the past. At the time, we felt we could make things work under both operating systems. With our limited development resources, and the increasingly long time that Path Finder 4 has taken to complete (which building for both versions of the OS has complicated), we felt a little pain now for all of us would be worth the payoff in the end.
If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback on this or anything else related to Path Finder 4, please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.
Thank you for your continuing support. We really appreciate it and couldn’t do it without you!
