Sounds like a great idea Ted, but guess what. If everyone has guns, and everyone is ready to kill at a moments notice, don’t you think the rapists, burglars, and child molesters will have guns too?
Who’s going to win in a gun battle: a housewife with a 22 pistol in her purse, or a professional criminal jumping out of the bushes gun in hand?
I understand your point of wanting to eliminate crime. Everyone wants that. But promoting an arms race between the common citizen and criminals isn’t going to work.
Killing the criminal is just a solving the symptom rather than the cause. Why do these people become criminals in the first place? Maybe they are uneducated because they went to a shitty inner city school. Maybe they are mentally unstable and need to be hospitalized or counseling.
If this society keeps producing criminals year after year, figure out why and solve that problem first. Then you won’t need guns.
BTW: I’m not anti-gun. Own one if you want, but I would rather work towards making them obsolete than to promote their spread. I’m 36 years old, and I’ve never been in a situation where I needed to kill another human being. The USA is one of the safest places to live on the planet. Let’s work towards making it safer. Everyone buying guns isn’t the right way to achieve this.
Food for thought: Look at the gangs in the major US cities. Everyone has guns, but has that stopped crime and violence? No, the opposite has happened. Armed inner city gang members have the lowest life expectancy of any other group. Gun violence is the leading cause of death for young men in some cities. According to Ted’s logic, the inner cities should be peaceful and crime free.

Nugent's an a**hole, but there have also been plenty of studies showing gun control does not reduce incidences of violent death, most recently a big one by the CDC.
Then again, I live in Japan, where not even the cops have guns. :)
The real problem is drugs. They should just take away drugs from everyone and the world would be a better place.

With guns you can practice and train, and thus minimize your disadvantage. The odds will be much more even.

Australia has never had a gun culture like the US, and that's a good thing - we're a *lot* safer for it. Fewer guns in everybody's hands mean fewer guns for criminals - where do you think your gangbangers steal their guns from?

Australia took away the guns from lawful citizens and crime rose. The criminals down under are happier because the don't have to worry about so many people with a gun pointing at them, only a kitchen knife.
I don't understand your point about gang bangers and the crime rate in big cities. They have guns because they use them irresponsibly and probably obtained them by stealing them, or having them stolen for them. People who own and use guns responsibly don't all walk around with sidearms ready to shoot at criminals. Or are you implying they should to lower the crime rate?
Do you really think removing guns from everyones hands will make it a safer world? First of all, you'll never get all the guns. Too many for too long. Second, the criminals aren't going to surrender their arms, they like them too much.
Ted is over the edge, I'll agree. I don't like hunting, for that matter. I do own an AR-15 and a Glock. Taking away my guns will hardly make the world safer. I suggest social programs that help to eliminate social anger and poverty would be money better spent than millions of dollars spent harvesting and melting guns from law-abiding citizens.
