Crashing issues on certain Mac Pros
September 7, 2006
For those of you lucky enough to own one of the spiffy new Apple Mac Pro machines, I glower with jealousy in your general direction. That said, there is an issue with Path Finder on some of the new Mac Pro machines where Path Finder crashes on launch.
We’ve reported this issue to Apple and they have confirmed that there is a bug in the installed version of OS X that some of the Mac Pro machines ship with. They have informed us that they will be fixing this issue in a future OS update (the fabled 10.4.8, perchance?)
Interestingly, there are two different builds of OS X 10.4.7 that ship with the Mac Pros, and only one of them is susceptible to this problem.
To see what build of OS X 10.4.7 your Mac Pro is running, go under the Apple menu to About This Mac. After the About This Mac window has appeared, click on the version number that appears directly under the Apple logo. The version number will change to the OS X build number.
Any Mac Pro that is running Mac OS X 10.4.7 build 8K1079 will have issues getting Path Finder to successfully launch.
Steve received his Mac Pro a few days ago and we were surprised that Path Finder ran with no issues on his system. It turns out his version of Mac OS X 10.4.7 is build 8K1124 - a higher build number than the aforementioned 8K1079 build that doesn’t play well with Path Finder.
Until Apple releases an update that fixes this issue there is a work around that will allow you to launch and use Path Finder. Unfortunately it means losing the ability to compress files. :(
Here’s how to work around the crashing issue:
- Select the Path Finder application in the Finder.
- Right (or control)-click on it and select “Show Package Contents”
- Navigate in the Path Finder bundle to:
Path Finder.app/Contents/Frameworks/StuffitCore.framework/Versions/A/Plug-Ins/And move all of the contents of the Plug-Ins directory out to another location on your hard drive. This will allow Path Finder to launch.
We apologize for any inconvenience this problem may have caused and we hope that Apple gets the fix out for this quickly. If you have any other questions or comments, please post them in the Cocoatech Forum or send us a support email.
